Facebook teases 'new home on Android' coming April 4

Facebook sent out an invitation to the media late Thursday afternoon, asking them to attend an event on April 4 where the company would show off their "new home on Android."

What this means exactly, no one knows. There have been rumors of a Facebook phone for years, but aside from the poorly received HTC Sense a few years ago and its Facebook button, there has been nothing to them. But they have persisted anyway, with the latest being floated early this year.

The most likely option is perhaps a customized version of Android, like HTC's Sense or Samsung's TouchWiz, that integrates Facebook functions throughout and changes the overall look while keeping compatibility with apps and services.

Facebook has certainly been adding lots of options to its network: Email, cross-platform messaging, and voice and video chat — all of which would be nice to have on a phone.

We'll know next Thursday, when the event takes place — or earlier. We'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, the Associated Press reports that Facebook has received approval from the city of Menlo Park in California to build a second campus near its current headquarters. Whether that "home" is part of a double meaning of Facebook's media invite remains to be seen.
